2005 – The Landscape

Inspiration

The Landscape installation is the result of her interest in changing the scales and outdoors to something touchable, closer, and, more importantly, homey. It is still one of her favorite activities to lie down and watch the millions of stars rolling across the night sky. She still remembers vividly how she always dreamed of raising her hand to catch the stars as a child. She always tried to listen to the stars; she thought if she listened carefully, she could hear the mysterious voices of the cosmos.

Planning & Implementation

In this project, the blue LED lights represent the stars. There are also two speakers to transmit live sounds from outside the room. Additionally, there is a sensor placed on the step so that when someone goes inside, the lights turn on automatically. She painted the cylinder white and then filled the bottom end of it with different colors of plasticized clay (blue, blue-green, and white).

Another aspect of this project is that it is suspended from the ceiling. Although she fixed it firmly with some strong wires, what people see is that it is held by a thick rope and two heavy balances. The room is almost dark; there is just some weak light emitted from above the drum to make the rope visible. There is a notable difference between the inside and outside of the drum; the outer layer is completely rough; the cylinder is rusted and seems very heavy and is held in place by an old thick rope. On the contrary, the inner side’s design is rather childish. The smell of plasticized clay is dominant. Colorful flashing lights are everywhere, yet the sound is not clear, as if one tries to listen to the whispers of some faint childhood memory.

Objective

This work leaves the audience alone with their memories. When one enters the setting, it looks and feels as if they have stepped on a stage; the lights turn on and then they hear a whisper that will gradually grow clearer. The flashing LEDs ignite the sense of stepping into a celebration or a festival from distant childhood memories.

The Landscape project was made from a metal cylinder, 20 blue LEDs, 2 speakers, 1 light sensor, 1 microphone, 1 amplifier, plasticized clay, some rope, 2 x 10 kg weights, 3 halogen lights placed on the floor, 1 halogen light positioned for the rope, 1 circular board for the floor lighting, and some wires.
