This work was made from two suspended blocks of timber that moved against each other in horizontal directions using electrical magnets’ attraction-repulsion force. The timer switch changed the polarity of the magnets following a specific time sequence; therefore, the timbers would pull and push each other at regular intervals. This collision generates the “banging sound.” Magnets are hidden inside the timbers.
Only two pieces of metal (nearly 1 cm wide) are exposed at the point of collision of two timbers. The only clue as to why timbers move and collide is perhaps the wiring, exposed only to a trained eye.
In this work, she tried to show the attraction-repulsion relationship between a couple.
The following short movies illustrate various timings utilized in programming the collision and silence intervals and their respective interval patterns.
This project was made from two 200x5x5 cm wood blocks/timbers, two coil magnets, a timer, and 8 wires to suspend it from the ceiling.
